- I managed to install most of the System 7.5.3 components under SS 3.4 on
- my A1200 (68030/40MHz, 16MB fast). Hopefully SS will soon be fixed to
- work with the latest MacOS, but if anyone wants to try, maybe these tips
- will help:
-
- The MacOS wouldn't load with System 7.5 Update 2.0, so I replaced it
- with the System 7.5 Update 1.0 from System 7.5.1. The System 7.5.3
- Extensions Manager and Monitors Control Panels wouldn't work; I replaced
- those with the 7.5 versions. Speech Manager and MacinTalk crashed my
- Amiga; I trashed those.
-
- System 7.5.3 lets you use classic AppleTalk or Open Transport 1.1; a
- tool called Network Software Selector in the Apple Extras folder
- switches between them. NSS makes certain Control Panels (Network &
- MacTCP for classic AppleTalk; AppleTalk & TCP/IP for OT) visible or
- invisible, depending on the network software selected. Unfortunately,
- NSS apparently won't run without System 7.5 Update 2.0.
-
- The System 7.5 Update Easy Install determines which network software
- you're currently using and sets that as the default. After upgrading to
- 7.5.3, I moved the Network & MacTCP Control Panels and preferences out
- of the System Folder, restarted, and used the Custom Install to add Open
- Transport for 68K Only. Trying to change the network software by just
- swapping the Network & MacTCP Control Panels for the AppleTalk & TCP/IP
- Control Panels, does not work.
-
- Using OT 1.1 with FreePPP 1.0.5 seems to work as well as MacTCP 2.0.6
- does, and the TCP/IP Control Panel is more flexible. But because
- OT 1.1 uses much more memory and requires at least a 68030, you might
- want to stick with MacTCP. I only use SS for Mac PPP stuff, so I
- can't say how stable other components like AppleTalk are under this
- mishmash of a system setup. Proceed with caution...
